Walter Süsskind
Jan Walter Süsskind, also known as Walter Susskind, was born on May 1, 1913, in
Prague, and was a Czech-British pianist, conductor, and composer. He studied
under Josef Suk and later conducted under George Szell. Fleeing the German
occupation of Czechoslovakia in March 1939, he settled in Britain, forming the
Czech Trio and joining the Carl Rosa Opera Company. He was chief conductor of
the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in Glasgow from 1946 to 1952. He later
conducted the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra until 1955 and the Toronto Symphony
