The Whiffenpoofs
The Yale Whiffenpoofs is a collegiate a cappella ensemble established in 1909 at
Yale University. It is the oldest such group in the United States and was named
after a character in the Victor Herbert musical comedy Little Nemo. The group
consisted of 14 senior students, including alumni such as Cole Porter, who
performed in the 1913 lineup, and Jonathan Coulton. The ensemble's concerts
traditionally opened with the Czech folk song “Aj lučka, lučka široká” and
concluded with “The Whiffenpoof Song”. The latter recording became a hit for
