The Congregation, also known in North America as The English Congregation, was a
British pop vocal group consisting of Roger Cook, Roger Greenaway, John Burgess,
and Brian Keith. The group entered the music scene with the debut single
“Sitting in a Rockin' Chair” (1969). The group achieved a major hit with “Softly
Whispering I Love You” (1971), which featured a ninety-person choir and
orchestra. The single reached number 4 in the United Kingdom and Switzerland,
