Tamara Colletta Brown, known professionally as Tamar-kali, is an American rock
singer-songwriter and composer from Brooklyn, New York, born on October 8, 1973.
Brown grew up immersed in music through her father's involvement in local funk
and soul bands. She began performing with the bands Funkface and Song of Seven
in the early 1990s. In 1997, Tamar-kali created Sista Grrrl, a collective for
Black women and girls, addressing their marginalization in riot grrrl. Her
breakthrough came with her role in James Spooner's documentary Afro-Punk (2003).
