Stig Evald Börje Westerberg was born on November 26, 1918 in Malmö, Sweden. He
studied at the Royal Academy of Music from 1937 to 1942 and furthered his
studies in Paris under Paul Kletzki. Westerberg began his career as a repetiteur
at the Royal Opera House from 1941 to 1945 and made his debut conducting the
Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1946. He held various positions, including
Conductor of the Oscarsteatern (1947-1948) and Artistic Director of Gävle
