Shirley M. Gunter, born on September 29, 1934, in Coffeyville, Kansas, was an
American singer and songwriter who led the early female doo-wop group Shirley
Gunter and the Queens. After moving to Los Angeles in 1942, she was signed by
Flair Records following a recommendation from her brother, Cornell Gunter. After
releasing solo singles, she formed the Four Queens with Blondene Taylor, Lula
Bee Kenney, and Lula Mae Suggs. Their breakthrough came with the song “Oop
