Randi Stene, born on April 12, 1963, in Trondheim, is a Norwegian mezzo-soprano
and opera director. After studying in Trondheim, Oslo, and Copenhagen, Stene
gained international recognition for her role as Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier
at the Opéra Bastille in Paris in 1993. She also performed this role
successfully in London. Her portrayal of Silla in Hans Pfitzner's opera
Palestrina at Covent Garden led to her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New
