Oteil Burbridge was born August 24, 1964 in Washington, D.C., and grew up in an
African‑American family. From an early age he trained in jazz and classical
music, mastering bass guitar, drums, bass clarinet, violin, and trumpet, while
his brother Kofi learned flute and keyboards. Oteil Burbridge’s first
professional break came as a founding member of Bruce Hampton’s avant‑garde
group Col. Bruce Hampton & the Aquarium Rescue Unit, where he showcased his
