Oskar Danon, born on February 7, 1913, in Sarajevo, Austro-Hungarian Empire
(modern Bosnia and Herzegovina), was a Bosnian Serb composer and conductor. He
studied music in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and Prague, obtaining his Ph.D. in
musicology. Danon began his career as a conductor in Sarajevo and later became
the conductor and director of the Belgrade Opera from 1944 to 1965. Danon made
his Vienna State Opera debut in 1964 with The Gambler and was awarded the
October Award of the City of Belgrade for his conducting activity and the AVNOJ
