Oscar Hernández is an American pianist, arranger, and producer of Puerto Rican
descent who was born in New York City on March 22, 1954. He grew up in the South
Bronx and taught himself piano in his family's apartment basement after being
introduced to the basics by local musicians. He made his recording debut playing
on the track “Don Pastrana” with Joey Pastrana and La Conquistadora. Hernández
performed with Ismael Miranda in 1972 and subsequently collaborated with Ray
Barretto, who introduced him to jazz music and with whom he recorded the classic
