Old & In The Way was formed in 1973 in San Francisco, United States, by guitarist and vocalist Peter Rowan, fiddler Vassar Clements, banjoist and vocalist Jerry Garcia, mandolinist and vocalist David Grisman, and bassist John Kahn. The group quickly established a reputation for traditional bluegrass, performing pieces such as "Pig in a Pen" and bluegrass‑styled renditions of the Rolling Stones’ "Wild Horses" and Peter Rowan’s "Panama Red".
