Matthew Welch, born in 1976, is an American composer and bagpipe player whose
early education included a bachelor’s degree in music at Simon Fraser University
and graduate studies at Wesleyan University under Anthony Braxton and
Alvin Lucier. His first major release, Ceol Nua (2002), introduced his blend of
free jazz and experimental music to the bagpipe repertoire. Subsequent albums
include Luminosity (2009) on Porter and Blarvuster (2010) on Tzadik, expanded
