Mary Ann Varney, known professionally as Mary Love, and born on July 27, 1943,
in Sacramento, California, was a soul and gospel singer. She began her music
career after being discovered by Sam Cooke's manager, J.W. Alexander. Her
initial recordings for the Modern record label included "You Turned My Bitter
into Sweet" (1965) and "Let Me Know/Move a Little Closer" (1966), which reached
