Markos Vamvakaris, born Μάρκος Βαμβακάρης in 1905 in Ano Syros, Greece, was a
singer and bouzouki player. He fled to Piraeus at twelve, working odd jobs
before learning the bouzouki and performing in hashish-smoking establishments.
His breakthrough came in 1932 with recordings "Efoumernam' ena vrady" and "Taxim
Serf". Vamvakaris collaborated with musicians like Giorgos Batis, performing in
clubs. Notable songs include "Frankosyriani". Post-World War II, he faced health
issues and declining popularity until the 1960s revival by artists like Grigoris
Bithikotsis. He died in 1972. H...
