Mantronix is an American hip hop band formed in 1984 by DJ Kurtis Mantronik and
rapper MC Tee. The duo, consisting of Jamaican-American émigré Kurtis el Khaleel
and Haitian-born Touré Embden, began their musical journey when they met at
Downtown Records in Manhattan. Their debut single "Fresh Is the Word" became a
club hit in 1985, reaching number 16 on Billboard Magazine's Hot Dance Singles
Sales chart and was featured on their debut album The Album. The group signed
with Sleeping Bag Records and released several influential albums including
Music Madness (1986) and In Full Effe...
