Joe Guy
Joseph Luke Guy was an American jazz trumpeter born on September 29, 1920, in
Birmingham, Alabama. He began his professional music career in New York City as
a member of the Fats Waller backup band in the late 1930s. In 1938, Guy joined
the Teddy Hill orchestra, succeeding the musician Dizzy Gillespie, and
subsequently became a key soloist in the Coleman Hawkins big band in 1940. He
reached wider visibility as a member of the after-hours band at Minton's
