Joseph Alan Gilman is an American jazz pianist. He began studying piano at age
seven and later earned degrees in piano performance and jazz studies from
Indiana University, followed by a master’s degree in jazz and contemporary media
from the Eastman School of Music, and a doctorate in education from the
University of Sarasota. Gilman’s recording career began in the late 1980s,
including early releases such as Joe Gilman (1987). He participated in the
Kennedy Center/USIA Jazz Ambassador program, touring Africa in 1998 and 2000.
