Giuseppe Taddei was an Italian baritone who made his professional debut in 1936
as the Herald in Wagner’s Lohengrin after studying in Rome. He sang at the Rome
Opera until 1942, when he was conscripted, and after World War II resumed his
career, appearing for two seasons at the Vienna State Opera and making major
debuts in 1947 in London and in 1948 at the Salzburg Festival, La Scala in
Milan, and the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples. His American debut took place at
