Giannis Papaioannou, born on January 18, 1913 in Kios, Ottoman Empire, was a
Greek composer, performer, and lyricist of the rebetiko. From 1937 to 1939, he
performed nearly every night at an Athens club alongside Markos Vamvakaris and
Stélios Keromýtis. Papaioannou's prolific career in the 1940s yielded numerous
compositions, including classics such as "Πεντε Ελληνες στον Αδη", "Καπεταν
Ανδρεας Ζεππος", and "Φοβάμαι μη σε χάσω". Despite the modernization of Greek
tavern music in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Papaioannou continued to perform
traditional rebetiko in select Athens...
