George Clarence Brunies, also known as Georg Brunis, was born on February 6,
1902 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He began playing music at age eight, starting
with the alto horn in Papa Jack Laine's band before switching to trombone. By
1921 he moved to Chicago and joined the New Orleans Rhythm Kings, becoming a key
member of their house band at Friar’s Inn. Brunies' technical skill was evident
in his tailgate style, which influenced many musicians. He joined Ted Lewis's
band, where he performed until 1934 and later performed regularly at Nick’s jazz
club in New York City until 1938....
