Fletcher Henderson, born James Fletcher Hamilton Henderson on December 18, 1897
in Cuthbert, Georgia, was an American pianist, bandleader, arranger, and
composer. He began playing piano at age six and demonstrated a keen ability to
read music by 13. After graduating from Atlanta University with degrees in
chemistry and mathematics, Henderson moved to New York City in 1920 and joined
Black Swan Records as musical director in 1921. Henderson's band became the
