Elsie Carlisle, born Elizabeth Carlisle on January 28, 1896 in Manchester, was
an English singer who began her career as a child performer. Her first
commercial recordings were released in 1926. She gained prominence during the
British dance band era of the 1920s and 1930s, collaborating with notable bands
such as the Ambrose orchestra. Carlisle recorded over 300 sides between 1926 and
1942, including well-known songs like "Home, James, and Don't Spare the Horses"
and "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square". She also introduced Cole Porter's
composition "What is This Thing Called...
