Edwin McArthur, born September 24, 1907 in Denver, Colorado, was an American
conductor who began his career as a professional pianist. He moved to New York
City to study at the Juilliard School and accompanied Florence Foster Jenkins on
piano early in his career. In 1935, he was engaged by Norwegian soprano Kirsten
Flagstad. McArthur made his conducting debut with Flagstad and Lauritz Melchior
at the Metropolitan Opera in 1941, directing Tristan und Isolde. He recorded
several albums with Flagstad, including works by Edvard Grieg, Franz Schubert,
