Earl Lee Nelson, known professionally as Jackie Lee, was born on September 8,
1928, in Lake Charles, Louisiana. He began his musical journey singing in his
church's gospel choir before moving to Los Angeles with his family in 1937. In
the 1950s, Nelson started his career in doo-wop with the Hollywood Flames and
later formed the R&B duo Bob & Earl with Bobby Byrd. His breakthrough came as
Jackie Lee with the hit song "The Duck" (1965), which peaked at #14 on the
