Dorothy Fields
Dorothy Fields, born in Allenhurst, New Jersey, on 15 July 1905, was a
librettist and lyricist. Her breakthrough came in 1928 when she wrote lyrics for
Blackbirds of 1928 with composer Jimmy McHugh, beginning collaborations that
produced songs including “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love” and “On the Sunny
Side of the Street.” Over nearly five decades, Fields wrote more than 400 songs
for Broadway and Hollywood, including the Oscar-winning “The Way You Look
Tonight” and “Pick Yourself Up.” She also wrote the books for Annie Get Your Gun
