Donald Gale Lanphere, born on June 26, 1928 in Wenatchee, Washington, was an
American jazz tenor and soprano saxophonist. He moved to New York as a member of
Jonny Bothwell's group and gained recognition through performances and
recordings with musicians like Fats Navarro, Woody Herman, and Charlie Barnet.
He was arrested in 1951 for heroin possession, after which he returned to
Washington and worked in his family's music store. Lanphere made a comeback in
the 1980s, touring extensively and releasing Don Lanphere & Larry Coryell (1990)
with guitarist Larry Coryell. He passed away...
