Richard Durant Cary, known professionally as Dick Cary, was an American jazz
trumpeter, composer, and arranger born on July 10, 1916, in Hartford,
Connecticut. He earned a bachelor's degree in music from Wesleyan University and
began his career working in Connecticut and New York. Cary landed full-time solo
work at Nick's in Greenwich Village in 1941. During his stint in the Army from
1944 to 1946, he continued recording with artists like Muggsy Spanier.
Post-discharge, he joined Louis Armstrong's All-Stars and later worked with
