Deborah Marcia Fraser, born on June 9, 1965 in KwaMashu, Natal, South Africa, began her career as a backing vocalist for prominent acts such as Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Brenda Fassie in the mid‑1980s. Her breakthrough came in 2000 with the album Abanye Bayombona, which sold over one million copies in South Africa. She followed with Born Again (2001), Udlalile Nagbantu (2003), Ngikuxolele (2004), Isililo (2007), and Awunasabelo (2010).
