Canadian alternative country band Cowboy Junkies is the brainchild of founder members and childhood friends Alan Anton and Michael Timmins. Anton and Timmins had been in a punk band together and garnered some experience of the music business. One of their projects, an experimental band called Germinal, relied on the members playing whatever they wanted, regardless of what the other musicians were playing, pushing the boundaries of musical exploration.
