Carrie Louise Smith, born on August 25, 1925, in Fort Gaines, Georgia, was an
American singer known for her contributions to jazz and blues. She began her
career as a member of the church choir and gained early recognition performing
at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1957. In the 1960s, Smith appeared on TV Gospel
Time, a television show aimed at Black audiences. Her breakthrough came in the
1970s with singing with Big Tiny Little and her performance alongside Bessie
