Brother Resistance, born Roy Lewis on October 24, 1954, in East Dry River,
Laventille, Trinidad and Tobago, was a rhythm poet and musician. He began
writing poetry in primary school and later studied at Queen's Royal College and
the University of the West Indies. Influenced by Trinidad’s 1970 Black Power
movement, he changed his name to Lutalo Masimba in 1982 and adopted the stage
name Brother Resistance. In 1979, he became the lead singer of the Network
