Avon Long, born June 18, 1910 in Baltimore, Maryland, was an American singer and
actor. He began his career in 1933, performing in a production of Hot Chocolate,
and was later featured at the Cotton Club in Harlem singing "Brown Boy". Long
appeared in several films, including Centennial Summer (1946) and The Sting
(1973). On Broadway, he starred in multiple productions, including Beggar's
Holiday, Bubbling Brown Sugar, and Porgy and Bess. In 1973, Long received a
nomination for the Tony Award for Best Supporting or Featured Actor in a Musical
for his role in Don't Play Us Cheap. ...
