Alan Jay Lerner, born August 31, 1918, in New York City, was an American
lyricist and librettist. He began his career contributing to Harvard Hasty
Pudding musicals during his time at Harvard University. In 1942, Lerner met
Frederick Loewe, marking the start of their collaboration. Their first major
success came with Brigadoon in 1947. Lerner and Loewe achieved significant
acclaim with My Fair Lady in 1956, which set box-office records and won multiple
